Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre
The visitor centre, made up of these hexagonal "pods", was built in 1977. It was an innovative design in its day incorporating an audio visual theatre, interpretive exhibition and gift shop as well as Forest Rangers' office and other facilities. It was designed to blend into the Forest and after 32 years this has been achieved. However, having been built on an environmentally sensitive area in the Forest this isn't compatible with the National Nature Reserve status granted by Natural England in 2002. Part of the agreement made requires diversion of mass tourism from the most ecologically sensitive areas, one of which is where the current visitor centre is situated. The new centre will be built on the other side of the B6034 to the current one in what is known as “Naish‘s Field“ .
