More support for the Major Oak
This shows the healthy new growth on this ancient oak. The health and continued survival of the tree is facilitated by several measures. A fence was erected in 1975 to protect the root span from the compacting of the ground round the tree by visitors' feet. In 1994 an inert mulch replaced the grass underneath the tree canopy greatly increasing the water and nutrient supply available to the root system. Substantial metal props, supporting the large lower branches were installed in 2001 to replace the old wooden posts that had been in use since 1975. Note the strong steel cables anchoring the props to the ground. These are also used higher up in the crown of the tree to stabilise the upper branches.
