George Heriot's School
George Heriot, born in Edinburgh in 1563, was Court Jeweller to King James. He made his fortune when the court moved to London, and died there in 1623. Under the terms of his will a Foundation was set up to maintain and educate poor fatherless boys. When completed, this building was occupied by Cromwell, and it was not until 1659 that the first pupils moved in. Heriot's is now a private day school for girls as well as boys.
