Barcaldine Castle
Barcaldine Castle
Still Campbell owned this picturesque castle, dated 1609, was one of the 7 castles built by the notorious Black Duncan of the Cowl. MacIan, chief of the Glencoe MacDonalds was detained here in December 1691 whilst going to Inveraray to take the oath of allegiance to King William. His belatedness a pretext for the Massacre of Glencoe. The victim of the Appin Murder, Colin Campbell of Glenure,'the Red Fox',was born here. Early in the 20th century the then laird planned kidnapping Lloyd-George & trying him here under his rights of 'Pit & Gallows' for his imposition of Income Tax! More happily the present laird is a Good Samaritan helping start my car when it broke down outside the castle!
