Buildings in the forest
The visitor centre in Sherwood Forest Country Park, made up of hexagonal "pods", was built in 1977. It was an innovative project in its day designed to blend into the Forest and after 32 years this has been achieved, as is evidenced here. However, having been built on an environmentally sensitive area in the Forest this isn't compatible with the National Nature Reserve status granted by Natural England in 2002. Part of the agreement made requires diversion of mass tourism from the most ecologically sensitive areas, one of which is where the current visitor centre is situated. The new centre will be built on the other side of the B6034 to the current one in what is known as “Naish‘s Field“ .
