Tintagel: Trebarwith Farm waterwheel
Tintagel: Trebarwith Farm waterwheel
Cleared of undergrowth in the 1990s, the 25’ diameter waterwheel is being reclaimed by nature in 2009. A ring gear on the inner shroud plates engaged with a pinion mounted on the wall above and via drive shafts powered machinery in barns at Trebarwith Farm 200 yards or more away. The waterwheel was fed by a small pond and the limited water supply probably only allowed a couple of hours running time, before the pond ran dry. The area round Tintagel is watermill country – many of the farms had water power, in addition to the grain mills and mines
