An unusual memorial
An unusual memorial
The unusual design of this memorial causes it to stand out from its companions in St Nicholas' churchyard. The dedication reads "In memory of Albert Morris of this parish who was killed in the railway accident near Oxford Decr. 24th 1874 aged 34. Deeply mourned and beloved by his sorrowing widow and child."

The accident referred to occurred on the GWR line at Shipton-on-Cherwell (SP4816) when several carriages derailed and fell into the Oxford canal, resulting in 34 deaths and 69 seriously injured. The cause was found to have been a tyre on a carriage of obsolete design, worsened by a poor braking system causing the carriages to 'concertina' into the engine when it braked.
