Canongate coach and horses
Canongate coach and horses
Detail on an 18thC gravestone in the Canongate kirkyard, "erected by the Society of Coach Drivers in Canongate for their members" in 1767. It shows a sprung stagecoach crossing a stream by a high-arched bridge with a low parapet. The coach has reached the crown of the arch and the driver is guiding the team of horses safely down the descent. The bridge symbolises the crossing from this life to the next.
