A sandy corner in the discordant coastline where harder chalk (on the left) meets softer sandstone (seen in the cliffs straight ahead). In more technical terms, this is where the Chalk (Upper Cretaceous - Campanian) and the Reading Formation (Palaeocene) meet (information from Ian West's geology of the Wessex coast internet field guide).
