3 km from Carfrae, East Lothian, Great Britain

Web attack
Web attack
Hawthorn bush completely covered in webs spun by ermine moth caterpillars. It takes about two weeks to completely cover a tree or bush. They build webs around their favourite feeding plants in order to protect themselves from predators. Also see NT5571 : Alien spider attack (actually ermine moth caterpillars), NT5571 : Road verge attacked by ermine moth caterpillars and NT5571 : Webs formed by ermine moth caterpillars.
