Girsby Bridge
Girsby Bridge
This metal bridge was constructed in 1870 and carries a track and bridleway across the Tees from the Sockburn peninsula [far side] to Girsby. The bridge was financed by Theophania [what a splendid name] Collingwood Blackett of Sockburn Hall who had been in dispute with Darlington Highways Board over public access to the old Sockburn church which was within the grounds of the hall. Rather than reopen access to the old church, she had this bridge built so that people could visit All Saints Girsby instead.
