SE5785 : The watcher by the gate
near to Rievaulx, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

The watcher by the gate
The horse was very friendly, but then friendship leads to free food, and horses need plenty. A good footpath runs along the side of the hedge.
This fertile valley was donated to the Cistercian monks who founded Rievaulx Abbey, and from there went on to found six further abbeys in the British Isles. The footpath runs along the 12th century course of the river Rye, which the monks changed in order to gain better access to farmland.
