St Albans: The heronry on The Lake
This is actually an island in The Lake and is the home to an increasing number of herons. The number of nests has risen from 3 in 1992 to 23 in 2008, and in 2008 46 chicks were successfully reared. Looking at the photograph in close-up shows at least 12 herons perched in various places.
The Lake is on the site of the former Fish Pool of the Roman City of Verulamium, but the heronry island is a modern feature, appearing in the Ordnance Survey's 6" to the mile map of 1951 but not in the edition of 1925.
