This time last year, the entire area beyond this gate was still out of bounds - but the land was recently bought and is now being farmed once more. Plus, the old rights of way that were cancelled when the opencast arrived have all been reinstated and numerous pedestrian gates and signposts have been erected to emphasize this fact.
