To the right in the foreground is the faint trace of the old main road which left Kirkwhelpington to the north. The modern A696, Newcastle to Jedburgh road can be seen to the left. Towards the camera, it curves round to the west to by-pass the village of Kirkwhelpington.

St Oswald's Way Link

is a 156 Km long trail which runs from Heavenfield near Hexham to Holy Island on the Northumberland coast (although more commonly walked in the opposite direction). The Way follows the old road, touches the new road at the bend and then continues straight on up the hillside in the distance.
