The Spa and South Bay
The Spa and South Bay
The Spa building dates from 1877-80, but the spa waters were the main reason for Scarborough's growth from the mid 17th century, when the spa was visited by 'people of good fashion'. Sea bathing, for medicinal purposes [why else would you jump into the North Sea?] began around 1730.
