Steam Engine, ex British Leyland, Chorley
Steam Engine, ex British Leyland, Chorley
This was built as a weaving shed in 1914 but due to WWI was never used as such. Following the cessation of hostilities it was bought by Leyland Motors. Latterly owned by British leyland Parts, the engine was kept in good condition until its removal for preservation in 1988. It is still in store.
It was built by Clayton, Goodfellow of Blackburn and was typical of their production. It was of about 600 horsepower. It was especially interesting as it drove a big dynamo with electric drive to the machines. In contrast to the more usual lineshaft drive by ropes.
