St Albans: Roman Verulamium
Verulamium was the third-largest town in Roman Britain and was occupied between about 15 BC and 450 AD. To gauge the extents of the settlement the defensive wall was some 3.6 kilometres long. At the height of its occupation this area would probably have been covered in villas, but the buildings became derelict and most of the bricks and stones were used in the late 11th century to provide materials for the new Norman Abbey. Just fragments of the old city remain, including a mosaic in the building to the right TL1306 : St Albans: Verulamium Roman Mosaic & Hypocaust Museum.
