Malham Tarn: Great Close Cairn and Middlehouse
Malham Tarn: Great Close Cairn and Middlehouse
The pile of rocks is part of a large bronze age burial cairn situated on the summit of Creat Close hill. At some point the local farmer has re-arranged the upper stones to form a sheep shelter. Middlehouse farm, with its hay meadows lies in the distance just right of centre. The farm house and buildings were erected in the late 19th century but the old 17th century Middlehouse farm which lies near to the horizon to the left has remains dating to the Viking and Mediaeval periods.
