Modern Thorpeness was conceived by Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie in the early 20th century as a private holiday village.

This is Westgate, a road off The Whinlands. The houses on the left, designed by Frederick Forbes Glennie, are all grade II listed - for listing particulars (in order away from the camera) see LinkExternal link LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link. Across the top of the road is Westbar, designed by William Gilmour Wilson, the tower of which was built to contain a water tank. it too is grade II listed - see LinkExternal link.
