Emmet Square Birr

The square was re-named Emmet Square in 1922 to honour Robert Emmet the United Irish leader who was executed in 1803 after being found guilty of treason for leading an uprising in Dublin. The column in the centre of the square used to bear a statue of the Duke of Cumberland a decisive figure in the Jacobite wars in the 1700s. The statue was taken down in the early in the 20th. century when it was in danger of falling off the column.
