There once used to be two functional churches in the straggling village of Tivetshall: St Mary's and St Margaret's. In 1702 it was reported that St Mary's church > LinkExternal link had fallen into disrepair and although parishioners managed to find the funds for repairing their church at that time, more repair work was needed in 1947 for both churches and whilst the villagers were still trying to find the money, the vibrations caused by a low flying plane resulted in the collapse of part of St Mary's tower. After this the church was no longer used and in 1978 its roof was removed. During 1995 the Norfolk County Council supervised the removal of ivy and other vegetation, the walls were capped and repointed and a reinforced concrete beam was inserted in order to support the east gable and steel brackets were used for bracing the tower and the west wall. The churchyard is regularly cleared of undergrowth by volunteers.
