Grass-covered ancient cairn
Grass-covered ancient cairn
The low green mound shown here is the site of an ancient cairn (at approx. NS 36634 78440) which is now overgrown. The end-note describes a group of three cairns nearby, and a single cairn to their west; that single cairn is the one shown in the present photo.

See LinkExternal link for details of this cairn at WoSAS.

For another view, see: NS3678 : Grass-covered ancient cairn. The mound is regular in outline, with a flat top. Care is needed to distinguish this site from a number of superficially similar, but less regular, mounds located nearby (at approx. NS 36621 78500 / NS 36638 78518 / NS 36580 78457); the latter are irregular masses of bedrock, covered over with vegetation, rather than the remains of cairns.

Carman Hill is visible in the background.
Cairns on Carman Muir
On the moorland at the foot of Carman Hill, there is a cluster of three grass-covered cairns; see LinkExternal link for the main description of this group. Not far to the west, a similar cairn LinkExternal link stands alone. See LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite map, where green marker pins indicate the four cairns, a hut circle, and a chambered cairn.
