Grand Avenue, Savernake Forest, near Cadley
Grand Avenue, Savernake Forest, near Cadley
The avenue passes through the forest from the north-west to the south-east in a straight line. It was laid out by Capability Brown in the late 1790s and, at over four miles (6.5 kms) in length, is in the Guinness Book of Records as being the longest avenue in Britain. It is also an off-road cycle route. Because the road is so straight, there is a temptation for motorists to drive fast along the avenue. This isn't a good idea as there are speed-bumps at intervals which are either poorly marked or not marked at all.
