The start of Grand Avenue, Savernake Forest
Grand Avenue leads north-west from here for over four miles (6.5 kms) in a straight line through the heart of the forest. It was laid out by Capability Brown in the late 1790s. If in a car travel along with care as there are speed bumps at intervals which aren't well marked. Grand Avenue remains a private road and from memory, it is closed one day a year to prevent its becoming a highway under the Highways Acts. It is shown on the maps as an off-road cycle route so folk on pushbikes can use it. This is the other end of Grand Avenue Link
