Stark, chalk cliffs of The Seven Sisters. These rocks consist of a combination of minute fossilised green algae (their skeletal remains called coccolyths), combined with larger fossils of zooplankton species and shellfish (bivalves). The flint nodules are derived from silica originating from sponges. The cliffs were formed in the Cretaceous period (144 - 65 million years ago) in shallow water. Tectonic action heaved them into place.
