St Giles Church, Birtley
Keys to the Past Web Site: This church was built in the 12th century and restored in 1884. Some original medieval features survived the 19th century work and include the north wall of the chancel and the chancel arch. A prehistoric flint arrowhead and an eighth century inscribed stone were discovered here in the 19th century, the stone is now in the north chancel wall together with several medieval coffin lids in the west porch.
