Rock Cannon near Pont-y-Pair
This is the most obvious of three rock cannon near Pont-y-Pair Falls on the Afon Llugwy. A rock cannon consists of a number of holes drilled in the rock, with channels carved between them. The holes were loaded with black powder and powdered slate which was ignited to make explosive sounds during national and local celebrations. This rock cannon consists of 53 holes. There is now an interpretation board nearby.
The firing of rock cannon is largely confined to the slate quarrying and mining areas of North Wales, although one has been identified in the Lake District and four in Cornwall. Link
