Sandend Bay: wartime defences
Sandend Bay: wartime defences
The long, gently sloping, sandy beach at Sandend Bay was seen as a potential landing ground for the Germans in Word War 2. It was defended by a double row of concrete tank traps running the length of the beach and, at the east end, by a concrete pillbox for machine guns and a bunker housing a heavy weapon. Both had an uninterrupted view the full length of the beach.
The building on the hill is Glenglassaugh Distillery was mothballed in 1986 but recently started production of its single malt whiskey once again.
