The Vallum at Down Hill
The Vallum ran the whole length of the Wall from Newcastle westwards. It measured 120 Roman feet, just over 35 m, across. The material taken out of the ditch was normally piled in two mounds originally set 9 m back from each lip of the ditch. {Source: "Handbook to the Roman Wall" (14th Edition) by J Collingwood Bruce.}
