Foxgloves beside the steam, Dartmoor
The small stream rises on East Bovey Head and crosses Stapley Common to reach the B3212 near here. Foxgloves are also known as Fairy Thimbles and Deadmen's Bells and the generic name comes from the shape of the flower, which looks like a finger or digit. Foxglove plays an important role in medicine, yielding the drug digitalin which is used for the treatment of some heart complaints and must only be administered under medical supervision. In Wales the juice from the crushed leaves was used as a colouring agent to accentuate the pattern engraved on astone floor for decoration, as earlier mud floors had designs scratched in them.
