Whether a lane like this becomes a footpath, bridleway or public road seems to be a matter of chance. Presumably the steep part, north of Tyersal Beck, of this route from Tong Street to Pudsey was never improved sufficiently to allow use by carts, and so became a 'Bridle Road' (as indicated on the 1850 six-inch map).
