NY3881 : Ballagan Formation
4 km from Langholm, Dumfries And Galloway, Great Britain

Ballagan Formation
This exposure, on the bank of the Tarras Water, is an excellent example of the typical cementstone facies of the Ballagan Formation. The grey layers are siltstones and the buff-coloured ones are dolomite or cementstone. There are some sparse fossils in both the siltstones and the dolomite. In some places the dolomite has formed nodules. This rock was laid down in shallow slow-moving water, perhaps in an esturaine environment. The metal pipe, now protruding a couple of metres above the cliff face, used to be on the brink of the cliff, showing the amount of erosion to which the unstable outcrop has been subjected.
