Newburgh: cuckoo spit on rose-bay-willow-herb
The froth we call cuckoo spit is created by the developing nymphs of plant-sucking insects known as froghoppers Philaenus spumarius. The nymphs drink large quantities of sap and extract its nutrients and then blow the excess liquid out of their back ends, producing the froth. The froth protects them from predators.
The term cuckoo spit probably derives from the fact that its annual appearance coincides with the first calls of the cuckoo.
