The Old Bridge, looking towards the Buttress
The 'old packhorse bridge' in Hebden Bridge is on an ancient route from Halifax to Burnley. From here the route heads steeply up the hill to Heptonstall, via the 'Buttress'. The bridge was rebuilt in stone around 1610, replacing an earlier wooden bridge. It has been repaired or altered at numerous times over the last 500 years. Despite being referred to as the 'packhorse bridge', it would have been capable of carrying vehicular traffic.
