SO8832 : Abbey Mill
near to Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, Great Britain

Abbey Mill
Tewkesbury has been a centre for flour milling for hundreds of years. Abbey Mill originates from 1190, when the Benedictine Monks from the monastery milled flour for the local inhabitants. Rebuilt in 1793, the mill continued in operation until 1920 when it was displaced by a larger, more modern mill a short distance upstream (see SO8932 : Healing's Mill and Mill Avon, Tewkesbury, also now closed). The mill has now been converted for residential use and is connected to the shore by a bridge on the right, which comes into play when the river floods.
