Bed and bedstraw at The Bennett
Bed and bedstraw at The Bennett
The grassy sand dunes behind the beach are a favourite venue for summer socializing, in this case, it seems, complete with a sprung mattress.
In the foreground can be seen the sprawling yellow flowers of Ladies' Bedstraw/ y Felynllys (Galium verum) so called because it was once used for stuffing pillows and mattresses on account of its odour of new hay when dry, indeed it was said to be part of the baby Jesus' bedding in the manger. It was also for colouring cheese, curdling milk and its roots provide a reddish dye.
(Judging by the quantity of beer bottles and cans strewed around it would appear that the last occupant of this bed was no lady!)
