Family tragedy recorded in stone
A sorry tale is illustrated here - the grave of the first recorded quadruplets born in Wales, none of whom survived for more than nine days and whose deaths were rapidly followed by those of their father, brother and sister. One report suggests the family died from smallpox although there is no mention of this on the headstones. A small mystery lies in the fact there is no trace of a grave for the mother within the churchyard.
The stones read:
In memory of Isaac Hughes of Nantsyddion* in this parish who died 6th March 1856 aged 52 years.

Also to the memory of Hugh,
son of the above nam'd Isaac & Margaret Hughes who died March 1st 1856 aged 5 years.
Am hynny byddwch chwithau barod:
canys yn yr awr ni thybiwch y daw
Mab y dyn.
(This is from Matthew 24:44 - Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.)
- - -
Also to the memory of four infants, children of Isaac Hughes by Margaret his wife.

O'r un bronau y sugnasom
Yn 'r un beddrod y gorweddwn

(From the same womb on the same day we came
From the same breasts we suckled
In the same grave we lie
On the same day will we rise.)

Also to the memory of Hannah, daughter of the aforesaid Isaac & Margaret Hughes
She died 10th March 1856, aged 3 years.
