Take one gherkin, slice vertically
This much-photographed icon, masterpiece of Sir Norman Foster, deserves its celebrity, in my opinion. Located at 30 St Mary Axe, the Swiss Re building has so many subtleties of shape (not just its over-hyped profile) and shapes, and varieties of patterns and textures, as well as multiple reflections, that it can repeatedly surprise and delight the observer. Commercially, it has had a more chequered career. At the time of completion, 2004, Swiss Re(insurance) was still looking for tenants for much of the building, despite the lure of the tenants' bar on the 40th floor. In July 2009, I found current occupancy levels hard to determine.
