Hilbre Island Telegraph Station and a flagstaff base
A view of Hilbre Island Telegraph Station on a windy, cold and damp day. The Friends of Hilbre website records that the telegraph station was erected in 1841, and was converted to electricity in about 1859. This enabled information about approaching ships to be transmitted to Liverpool so that the merchants could be ready when the ships docked. The building has been restored as an interpretive centre, but is not always open, however, the lookout platform at the top of the steep steps provides an excellent view on a clear day. The stone square in the foreground appears to be the base of what is recorded on the 1876 O.S. map as a 'Flagstaff'; it is still recorded as such in 1938. The track to and from the island can be seen at the side of the building.
Note: Visitors to the island MUST always check the tide times.
