The coastline here is rugged and can prove deadly to shipping, so the lighthouse was built in 1900. It has a light beam can that be seen over 16 miles out to sea and a fog-horn that scares the living daylights you of you when it sounds! In order get such a light range, it has a monstrous system of lenses that weigh over 2½ tons, but as they float in a trough containing ¾ of a ton of mercury, they can be set in motion by the merest touch...
