Slanted oaks at Pig Bush, New Forest
This wooded area of heathland between Shepton Water and the B3056 road features many oaks, along with beech and silver birch and an understorey of holly. In this area there are several instances of closely spaced pairs of similar-aged oaks, probably grown up from a pair of acorns that grew up in bramble or thorn bush where they would have been protected from the grazing stock. It has been speculated that these pairs result from deliberate planting of acorns to supplement natural regeneration, but the evidence is not conclusive.
