Aberystwyth harbour

Standing out amongst the domestic fleet of sailing boats is MV Vigilance, a survey ship of the Environment Agency, during a visit to Aberystwyth. The 40 tonne boat is used for scientific surveys in the Bristol Channel and Cardigan Bay. Amongst other activities, the boat was involved in a megafauna survey (i.e. looking for whales, dolphins, sharks and other large marine animals) in recent years Link . It has two crew and can accommodate up to ten scientists. It is equipped with a side-scan sonar system to locate specimens and with equipment to measure the surface temperature of the sea as well as wind speed and direction Link .

The large building on the left is Aberystwyth Technium, a Welsh Government-funded centre to host start-up companies. Aberystwyth fire station is to its right, and the houses between them belong to the Trefechan area south of the Afon Rheidol. The foot of Pen Dinas can be seen on the right.
