Organ in the Church of the Assumption

The Revd Osmond Fisher (Rector of Harlton 1867-1906) installed the organ in 1869 in memory of his wife, reusing the case which he had designed for his previous church of All Saints, Dorchester some twenty years earlier. The design is clearly influenced by Sir John Sutton's instrument at Jesus College, Cambridge and inspired by the ideals of Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Cecil Clutton (The British Organ, 1963) mentions it as a rare example of silvering being successfully applied to pipe fronts. The Victoria County History records that in 1889 Fr Fisher gave the cottage and garden at the south-west corner of the churchyard for the maintenance of the organ and the repair of the church. The Organ Cottage was sold around 1957 and the proceeds invested in stock.

In 2008 the instrument was rebuilt and moved from its cramped and unsatisfactory position in the chancel to a west gallery under the tower arch. Pipework from the former organ in Little St Mary's Church, Cambridge, which was being rebuilt at the same time, was incorporated in the enlarged instrument at Harlton. Link
