Wet ponies grazing at Gurnetfields Furzebrake, New Forest
Gurnetfields Furzebrake is a raised area of lawn covering over 90 acres. The area was ploughed and used for food production in the Second World War (remains of a ditch can be seen running left-right in the foreground) and was later reseeded for grazing. Gorse (or "furze") is trying to make a comeback but it is routinely mowed to maintain the grazing for the ponies. The ponies will eat gorse (especially during the winter) but obviously grass is a less prickly to eat.
