Clump of Scots pine north of Starpole Pond, New Forest
This isolated clump of Scots pine are on a raised area between the Beaulieu River and the boggy valley above Starpole Pond. In the pine plantations very little grows beneath the trees, but this exposed clump allows enough light in around its edges for a healthy understorey of holly to grow - the holly (not visible in detail in this picture) is well-nibbled by the ponies.
