Inaccessible Pinnacle
Inaccessible Pinnacle
The "Inaccessible Pinnacle" (so named by mariners, long before any recorded ascent) is the highest point of Sgurr Dearg, overtopping the main bulk of the mountain by several metres.

Geologically, it is formed from a dyke of igneous material that has remained after the surrounding rock has weathered away (the opposite process is a little more common, i.e. a dyke softer than the surrounding rock often weathers first, leaving a steep cleft).

The two climbers in the picture are descending the steep western end, having climbed up the longer and easier east ridge; this is the most popular way of traversing the Pinnacle. It is possible to climb up this end, and there are also routes of about Very Severe or so on the south face (off the right of the picture).
