Gore Glen woodland
Gore Glen woodland
The age and uniformity of the trees is the giveaway that these are relatively recent plantings. The area was an industrial wasteland of coal bings until the late 1970s when the then Lothian Region brought in earth-moving equipment to re-landscape it for leisure purposes. These trees occupy the site of the Emily Pit bing. The Emily, named after a daughter of the Dundas family on whose land it was situated, was reputedly the deepest coal-mine in Scotland.
