Thomas Cook Memorial Cottages
Thomas Cook was born in Melbourne in 1808. He exploited the development of rail travel to become the originator of the travel agent concept in 1841 and later founder of the successful firm that still trades today. The cottages on the south side of High Street were built by him in 1890-91 and include fourteen cottages, a bakehouse, a laundry and the Mission Hall (on the right, see -
SK3825 : High Street). He stipulated they were for 'poor and deserving persons belonging to the general Baptist denomination'. They still provide accommodation for local senior citizens.
