Restored stream in Howen Bottom, New Forest
This is a view upstream of the recently restored stream in Howen Bottom. Before June this year water ran along the valley bottom in an artificial (straight) drainage ditch which had become badly eroded. The restoration of the original meandering stream will slow the flow from the valley (which drains the heathland slopes on either side) and in the wetter seasons the valley bottom will become more like the mire it once was. Funding for the project (and other similar nearby ones) is part of a SSSI wetland habitat restoration scheme.
